Tim Mottershead

Tim Mottershead accompanied Edward with great sensitivity sometimes contrasting, sometimes echoing the dynamics of the singer but always in emotional connection.
Buxton Fringe. July 2008

...he delivers all with aplomb. His introduction to one piece drew a gasp of astonishment...This is a recital that listeners to radio stations such as R3 and Classic FM would enjoy, as indeed would anyone with an interest in 'World Music'. Bravo!
Buxton Fringe. July 2008

Goldfinger and Diamonds Are Forever sounded terrific on solo piano...Madonna's Die Another Day , was turned into something of an avant-garde masterpiece at the hands of Mr. Mottershead...[who] is to be commended for his arrangements and technical skill in bringing these themes to the piano. Between songs he provided a well researched and often droll commentary

Tim Mottershead studied music locally, and continued at Liverpool and Aberdeen University , although he feels he has learnt most from a long friendship with the composer-pianist Ronald Stevenson. Tim's musical interests are wide ranging. He is regarded as an authority on the English composers Edmund Rubbra and Alan Rawsthorne, on whom he published a biography in 2006. He regularly contributes to scholarly publications, notably TEMPO and Piano Journal . He is a keen advocate of world music, having performed or written in every conceivable genre from Iraqi Oud music to Gamelan to music for Maypole dancing. As a composer of more than a 150 pieces, he now writes mainly for his own performance projects. As a performer he has appeared both as a member of the Indian classical music group Raga Jyoti and as a solo pianist .

In 2000, shortly after their formation, Raga Jyoti were awarded first prize at the Buxton Fringe Festival, and also performed for Ravi Shankar. Previous engagements include: Leeds Town Hall ; Acton Town Hall , London ; Bridgewater Hall, Manchester ; and the Imperial War Museum North, Trafford . In 2010 a national tour included the Lowry, Salford; Fairfield Halls, Croydon; and the Curve, Leicester .

As a pianist Tim has appeared at the festivals, concert series, museums and galleries, stately homes, concert halls, and universities including: Conway Hall, London; Bramall Hall, Cheshire; Astley Cheetham Art Gallery, Stalybridge , Cheshire; Haworth Art Gallery, Accrington, Lancashire; Sudbury Hall, Derbyshire ; Sewerby Hall, Bridlington; Bolsover Castle, Derbyshire; and Lyme Park, Cheshire . Tim has also undertaken workshops as the following venues: Eyam Hall, Derbyshire; Leamington Spa Art Gallery ; Walker Art Gallery , Liverpool; Darwen Vale Gifted & Talented School ; Glossop May Fest; and schools.

“It was good to see a full room to hear Tim Mottershead's recital… he delivered highly committed performances… All in all a tough yet compelling recital. It is much to be hoped that Tim Mottershead makes his way to Buxton regularly in future.”
Buxton Fringe. July 2000

“The scene was almost timeless … The programme was nicely balanced in styles, and the individual items not too long for the attention of children, of whom there were a number in the audience .”
Buxton Fringe, July 2001

“A concert of festive delight… was given by the distin guished Manchester based pianist Tim Mottershead. He had planned every detail with the loving care of a flower arranger . ”
